Life Always Goes On
As I fast approach the mark of my third year in stand up comedy, I can’t help and think back through all of the amazing things I’ve been able to see and do. Plus meeting hilarious people along the way. It’s truly a fantastic time in my life and I would NOT trade it for anything. Yes, stand up comedy is hard work. What makes it bearable is the fact that I can make people laugh and for a brief time make them forget about their own problems and laugh at mine!
When 2011 was drawing to a close, I had already done things I never had imagined until I was in the middle of this great comedic industry. By November, I was already booking shows into 2012, and as of today, January 2, 2012 I am booked into March with stand up! I’ve made it into two competitions, after having to submit my work and I’m looking forward to more throughout the year. I can say I honestly love what I do and I only wish that everyone in the world could be this happy with their own job or career. I realize it’s easier said than done, but follow your passion! That is the only way to true happiness.
I’m now on my way to level 3 of improv at PHIT(Philadelphia Improv Theater). I have to wait until March and will probably go through improv withdrawal, so I’m counting down the days! What can I say about improv? Improv is a remarkable outlet. It allows you to be silly! As an adult, I think some people lose sight of just being silly. It’s important to be able to express the emotions we have in a safe and fun environment. I know it’s one of the best ways to stay young! You should NEVER be too serious! Life is too short and I plan on living mine to the fullest! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

HERE’S HOW I BECAME A COMEDIAN
Hey! I meet a lot of people who always ask me, “how did you get into stand up?” Well the funny thing is, I would always think the same thing while I was watching comedians on tv or at a live show. I never knew by going to an open mic, might get me paid gigs some day…….and amazingly, it has. Now of course I’m NOT talking about BIG BUCKS, at least in some cases it was enough for gas and tolls. I will say that for me, it has NEVER been about the money, the money will come in time. If you really sat and thought about how many years it’s taken Louis Ck, Wanda Sykes, Kevin Hart, etc, so many comedians would just continue to work hard every chance possible and not complain whether they are getting paid, especially in the first 3-5 years. It is such a rush to get up on stage and have the wonderful feeling of people laughing and having a good time at something you wrote! There’s almost no other feeling like that.
Right now with 2 1/2 years of doing stand up, I’m working on polishing my solid thirty minute set, which is the middle or FEATURE spot in the world of stand up. I’m very excited to take the next step from host, to feature. I believe that in this industry, constantly writing, tweeking, and getting on stage as much as you can, is how you stay on the right path.
My new adventure I’m plunging into is Improv! I start my very first class in NYC in two weeks and I know that this will add so much more to my comedic timing and my stand up in general, that I would be crazy not to do it. More will be discussed as I move forward on this fantastic journey.

LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT
You know in life some people will just never be happy. When I meet people like this, I make it a point to make them laugh! I feel like it’s my job to do it. It brings me joy to know that this miserable slug who wasn’t even thinking of laughing is NOW smiling and laughing at something I said! Yes, I did write miserable slug……..I think that’s a perfect description. I’ve had times where I have been on stage, and look at an audience member who’s face is like stone. Not an emotion or life even flowing through their face! Which brings me to the saying, “you can’t please everyone” and I’m fine with that. Don’t get me wrong, I wish everyone who watched me perform, would just fall in “laughter” with me. I just know that is an unrealistic thought and refuse to set myself up for failure EVERYtime I get on stage. When I spot someone like that, I just look past them and all is right with the world again! Like it says……”life is what you make it”…….so, make it GREAT!

MY IMPROV LIFE
Well back in May I decided I was going to jump into improv, at the advice of a good friend and fellow comedian. I took my first ever class in NYC……..I’m so glad I did! I absolutely LOVE it! So much so that last night I started my second improv class in Philadelphia, which is overlapping my current class. So now I have two days a week of improv. I can honestly say, I’m addicted! The improv world is such a supportive and close knit community, that you can’t help to love it! What I’m learning is that it’s not about a singular person on stage, it’s about the team working together and supporting each other. Some would say the EXACT opposite of stand up comedy.
The main ingredient of improv is “YES AND”. When using that concept, whatever comes out of your mouth, anyone on stage with you will support that idea and then add to it. This makes for an exciting and fun recipe for improv! If you haven’t tried improv, I would recommend it. It will change your life for the better!
